Virtual Virtue?? Yes!

Virtual Virtue?? Yes!

Here at SIJ, the virtues are alive and actively developed amongst our students and staff: an Early Childhood student practices obedience by  following a direction, a lower elementary student practices courtesy by holding the door for Sister, an upper elementary student practices affability by greeting his teacher in the hallway.

But what happens to virtue education when we have to go virtual? Does virtue become “distanced” in our minds and lives while we are absent from the school building? No! Thanks to the resources available & the creativity of our teachers, virtue is still cultivated when we can’t be “in-person” for learning.

As a unique example, the 1st grade class was able to be physically in the classroom with a parent volunteer while Sister taught remotely from the convent. Thanks to the resources of Disciple of Christ/Education in Virtue, Sister was able to introduce a new virtue to the students for the week: industriousness! Through the video lesson and the virtue story, the students were acclimated with this new virtue so necessary for pursuing truth, goodness, and beauty….and for staying on task while a substitute teacher is in the room!

While in-person learning is the most effective means of cultivating virtue and fostering a relationship with Christ, it is a gift to have these resources readily available to use at home and at school at a moment’s notice. Virtue is always alive here at SIJ, and this year is no exception!
